The Multiple Personalities of Fringe

Spring/Summer ’15 was an amazing season to analyze, full of intricate and imaginative design techniques.  What did the lucky front row celebs see again and again?  FRINGE!  Fringe applied in every length, texture and color.  Meet the multiple fringe personalities of the fashion world’s daring creativity.

Oonah:  Couture Modern Crafter

Wait, is she wearing a macrame wall hanging?  No, it’s Oonah, lover of all things hand made using the finest yarns.  Fringe takes on the characteristic of it’s fiber, textured linen, thick and chunky wool, sleek, hand-knotted silk.

Koonhor’s designers Koon Lim and Catrine Thé, raised in Singapore and Indonesia respectively, met in NYC and base their collection in Milan.  This collection reflects global collaboration.

These chunky yarns in vegetable dyed colors give these fringed jackets an organic twist.  No synthetics here from the French John Galliano and my favorite of the season Isabel Marant.  Click below to see her relaxed and sophisticated SS15 collection.

Fringe makes a statement when well placed.  No need for distracting accessories.

This crafty, hand knotted look wouldn’t be complete without a nod to CHANEL and the sophisticated, artisinal use of boucle, presented here by Donna Karan.

 Montanna: Big Sky Lover

From Vail to South Africa, Montanna’s wardrobe can go from western to ethnic.  She crushes on suede. Unlike other fabrics, suede keeps its form when die-cut or laser-cut, which makes this napped hide a designer go-to.

Emilio Pucci blends leather and suede together, in his apparel and accessories, hitting the perfect note of relaxed luxury.  Click to see more detailed shots.

Suede fringe mixed with this beautiful woven breast plate and python pattern veers elegantly tribal. Ferragamo’s designer Massimiliano Giornetti was certainly safari inspired.

 Anaya: Tribal Jockette

Preen by Thornton Bregazzi blew the audience and their disciples away with this sporty version of tribal. They shared their inspiration on Instagram: cricket batsmen.

Justin Thornton and Thea Bregazzi describe their aesthetic as deconstructed chic with a minimal opulence. Intricate beaded fringe attached to elasticized bands swayed on the models creating hyper pattern play.

 Daphne: The Lady Who Launches

This lady would be elegant wearing a potato sack, but no.  Daphne pays attention to details in business and in dress.

She is a new fan of Elisabetta Franchi, with her Italian sartorial showmanship, and a forever fan of Giorgio Armani dressing the elite.

Marco de Vincenzo is the perfect man to dress this entrepreneurial diva.  Earning his stripes at Fendi, his collections have been described by W Magazine as “both futuristic and ladylike.”  Vogue wrote that his technical skills “left the audience in thralls of sartorial wonderment”.  Click below to see his swinging show.

I can’t help myself but use the word FRINGE-TASTIC here.

How did Proenza Schouler do this?  It looks woven to the body.  It would take confidence (and a great bod) to wear this, but our lady Daphne’s got both covered.

 Bellona: War Goddess

A gal needs to be a gladiator now and then.  Well in Kim’s case, perhaps alot.
